Pre-Dominant Passenger: Leisure Travelers

Thai Airways TG404

Similarities between Flights

1. At T-60, the Travelers for both SQ118 and TG404 peaked at 61.81 and 70.30 Travelers respectively.

On average, most flights open check-in counters 2 hours early. Hence, the half-mark, T-60, is the time where there would be a surge of Travelers (regardless Business or Leisure) as most Travelers do not want to check-in too early or too late for a flight.

Screenshot 1.png

2. At T-15, both flights experience low passenger arrival rates.

It is without a single doubt that lesser Travelers would arrive at the very last minute. No one wants to miss their flight, especially when they’re already running late to check-in. Who knows check-in counters might close early?

Screenshot 2.png

3. From T-120 to T-60, both flights experience an eventual increase in PAR – (SQ118 from 8 to 62) and (TG404 from 51 to 70).

Upon the opening of check-in counters, passenger’s arrival rate would start increasing as many would want to make way for check-in, to avoid unforeseen circumstances. Leisure Travelers may worry they arrive for the flight late whereas Business Travelers may reach the airport extremely early.

Differences between Flights

1. PAR Trendline for SQ118 is increasing steadily while for TG404 is decreasing steadily.

This can be explained due to the difference in pre-dominant Travelers.

SQ118 has an increasing trendline which justifies mainly for Business Travelers. Business Travelers are frequent flyers and are generally more familiar with terminal layouts and processes. Thus, they do not take a long time to navigate through check-ins.

TG404 has a decreasing trendline which justifies mainly for Leisure Travelers. Leisure Travelers are mainly infrequent flyers and generally less familiar with terminal layouts and processes. Thus, many tend to arrive early to avoid any unforeseen circumstances such as the inability to find the check-in desks.

Screenshot 4.png

2. At T-120, PAR for TG404 (51) is significantly higher than PAR for SQ118 (8).

This can justify for TG404 to have pre-dominantly more Leisure Travelers. The main reason for this high number is that Leisure Travelers comprises of big tour groups. Such Big Tour groups usually arrive for check-in early to avoid any administrative problems with check-in tickets or to cater for buffer time as big groups are more demanding on baggage systems.

Screenshot 5.png

3. From T-120 to T-105, PAR for SQ118 has been lower than PAR for TG404 for both intervals.

This can account for the fact that SQ118 has pre-dominantly more Business Travelers. Business Travelers spend less time and money in shops, which accurateness to lower revenue to airport operators. However, the point being is that since less time is spent, there really isn’t a need for Business Travelers to check-in early. This is in contrast with Leisure Travelers who want to spend more money and time exploring the airport.

Conclusion

Although we can see that similarities may not necessarily reflect which flights are pre-dominantly Business Travelers or Leisure Travelers, it is without a single doubt that this can be distinguished by the differences in flights.

Business Travelers tend to be more familiar with check-in processes and have few to none check-in baggage. This makes it less demanding on baggage systems and processing times.

On the other hand, Leisure Travelers tend to be infrequent flyers that are not familiar with the check-in processes. This puts a stall in the processing system. Moreover, many would tend to explore and spend money at the airport – making it one of the ultimate reasons why they prefer to check-in early.
