Individual Report

Introduction to Airport Access

Airport Access from my understanding is an indication of well-connected the airport is to the outside world. How accessible an airport is to the public is an important aspect to whether the airport can be classified as world class or top tier. This is mainly because having various transport modes that can be taken to arrive at the airport will make travelling more convenient for the public as they would not have to worry about how to get to the airport for their flights. On the other hand, having limited transport modes will cause the public to consider other airports when flying instead as others might be less troublesome and more convenient to travel to. Moreover, when the number of people visiting the airport decreases, it directly affects the amount of revenue the shops within the airport can generate. Thus, having an dense network of transport to connect the airport to the rest of Malaysia is essential for airport to make money.

Road Access

(Private & Rented Automobile)

Private Automobile

Passengers are free to drive their own cars to the airport and it would take around 40 to 45mins if there is no jam on the way. Driving to KLIA/KLIA2 would be very convenient as well due to the numerous expressways that connect the airport to the rest of Malaysia.

Rented Automobile

There are many rental services providers available at KLIA and KLIA2 for passengers to choose from.

KLIA

KLIA2

Key Consideration of Airport Access:

  1. Travelling to KLIA and KLIA2 takes about 40 to 45mins if there is no jam on the way.

  2. There is no waiting time as one can just drive whenever he wants to leave for the airport.

  3. Passengers can check in at home through online before leaving for the airport.

In conclusion, automobile may not be a great choice to choose if one is going overseas for a vacation as the parking fees will be very expensive and it would be better to take taxi to the airport. For tourist who arrive at KLIA/KLIA2, renting a car for their stay here might be a good choice for them if they want to explore Malaysia all by themselves.

Road Access
(Taxi & Private Hire)

Taxi

Airport Taxi (KLIA)

Airport Taxi operates through a coupon system that can be purchased from respective counters in the airport or one could simply make a reservation for it if taking from Peninsular Malaysia. On top of that, it has different tiers of service which correlates to the type of car one will be riding in. However, the fees will be higher than regular taxi providers at a minimum of RM37 if taken from KLIA and a minimum of RM33 if taken from KLIA2. Prices are also fixed based on destinations.

Metered City Taxi (KLIA & KLIA2)

Metered City Taxi is just regular taxi service that can be commonly found on the road. There are also 2 types of Metered City Taxis in Kuala Lumpur. One is called budget and the other is executive - the former charges RM3 for the first 1km and RM0.10 for each consequent 115 metres while rates for the latter are RM6 for the first 1km and RM0.20 for each consequent 150 metres.

Couponed Service (KLIA2)

There are city taxis in KLIA2 that operates through a coupon system that can be purchased at the respective counters. There are 3 types of taxi service available, budget, premiere, and family. The charges start from a minimum of MYR32 and are fixed based on the desired destinations.

Private Hire

Private Hire cars are another form of "taxi" service just that these drivers are usually driving their own cars. Some of them are part time drivers which means that they are not as professional as other taxi drivers who are under taxi companies. Private hire cars however, offers an even wider variety of cars than taxi companies. The price is more or less about the same as taxi companies.

Key considerations for Airport Access:

  1. Travelling to KLIA and KLIA2 from Kuala Lumpur by taxi generally takes about 40min and 45min respectively if there’s no traffic jam.

  2. Taxi is available anywhere, anytime. As taxis are available everywhere, passengers can simply flag down one along the side of the road nearest to them instead of having to find a way to KL Sentral first before being able to take the train.

  3. Short waiting time for taxi. This allows passengers to be less rushed when they are leaving their houses as if a taxi were to miss them, they could simply wait for another one which could come in less than a minute.

  4. Private hire cars however would take a little longer as one would have to book for one through apps before the driver could come and pick them up.

  5. Breakdown of taxi is quite rare and the chances of one taking a taxi that would break down is like hitting a jackpot but in an unlucky way. However, passengers would not have to worry as there are still many taxis available on the road for them to flag.

  6. Passengers can check in via online which is very convenient for passengers as they would not have to arrive too early at the airport just to avoid the crowd at check in counters.

In conclusion, if one is considering to choose between taxis and private hire, I would recommend Private Hire cars as this is what most people prefer to take nowadays and it provides decent service at a reasonable price. One can choose to take Airport Taxi provided that they have enough budget for it as even though it can be more expensive to ride one, it provides a much better overall service.

Road Access (Bus)

There are 6 bus service providers at KLIA and 16 bus service providers at KLIA2. The price of the tickets ranges from MYR1.50 to MYR80 depending on whether its single trip or return trip, adult or children and distance. The time it takes to travel from KL Sentral to KLIA and KLIA2 is approximately 1hour by bus. Among these 6 bus service providers at KLIA, most of them usually start operating before sunrise and last bus around midnight.

Key considerations for Airport Access:

  1. Approximately 1hr by bus.

  2. Some bus service providers operate their buses less often which resulted in their intervals to be up to 2h30mins long. This can be troublesome and inconvenient for passengers as they might have to leave their house earlier just to be able to catch the bus if not, they would end up missing their flights.

  3. Most bus service providers start operation before sunrise and ends after midnight. This will benefit passengers as there would be buses available before their flight should their flight depart around 7-8am. It also benefits those who just arrived at KLIA/KLIA2 around midnight as there are still buses in operation at that time.

  4. Breakdown of bus is rare to occur as well but if one were to breakdown, the passengers would have a very high chance of missing their flights as usually the bus service provider would send in another bus but this takes time as well. Passengers might be better off by taking a taxi immediately instead of waiting for the substitute bus.

  5. Passengers are able to check in online while they are on the bus to the airport or they could check in before boarding the bus.

In conclusion, if one is contemplating between which bus to take to the airport, it would be better to take Airport Coach as it is a dedicated airport coach. This means that the standards of the bus interior, exterior and service would be the best among all bus service providers to the airport as the its bus more or less represents KLIA/KLIA2 and it can affect one’s impression of KLIA/KLIA2. Although it is the most expensive bus to take for one way trips, it would be the most ideal bus to take provided that passengers have enough budget for it.

Rail Access (Train)

Another transport mode to access KLIA and KLIA2 is by train and it is the fastest way as well. There is only one train service provider to KLIA which is KLIA Ekspres. It is a direct service between KL Sentral to KL City Air Terminal (KL CAT). It takes only 28min to reach KLIA and 33min to reach KLIA2. There is also a transit train service with 3 stops along the journey at Bandar Tasik Selatan, Putrajaya/Cyberjaya, and Salak Tinggi. The transit train service will take 35 minutes to reach KLIA and 39min to reach KLIA2.

The trains are equipped with comfortable seats, digital entertainment, wheelchair seat restraint, wheelchair-friendly washroom, and luggage racks. An one way trip for an adult from KL Sentral to KLIA and KLIA2 is MYR 55 and return trip would be MYR 100. For childrens, it would be MYR 25 for one way trip and MYR 45 for return trip. There are other packages like Family Package and Group Saver package to accommodate to the needs of passengers.

Key considerations for Airport Access:

  1. 28mins from KL Sentral to KLIA, 33min to KLIA2

  2. Train service from KL Sentral to KLIA comes every 15min during peak hours and every 20min during off-peak hours and starts service at 5am and ends at 12:40am.

  3. Transit train service comes every 15min during peak hours and every 30min during off-peak hours and starts service at 4:33am and ends at 12:03am. Having trains that arrives at a shorter interval also means that there are more time slots available for passengers to book. They would also not find themselves in an awkward situation whereby they ended up arriving at the airport 3-4hrs before their flight departs just because there isn’t any later time slot that would get them to the airport before departure.

  4. Last breakdown I could find was on Mar 18, 2018 where the door malfunction on KLIA Transit train service. This also means that train service is quite reliable and there is a lower chance that passengers will miss their flight due to breakdown of train service.

  5. Passengers are able to check in at KL Sentral before they board the train or they they could check in via online as well. This benefits elderly more as they may not know how to check in via online and can be physically tiring for them to queue at check in counters for long period of time.

In conclusion, if one is considering to take train to KLIA and KLIA2, either train service could work as both are fast and reliable and only differs by 7mins. One could simply book a ticket for whichever train service that departs at a closer timing to the passengers needs. Even though it could be more expensive than taking a taxi ride, it is more hassle-free and is a more preferred transport mode by those who travel from KLIA.

Parking Facilities (KLIA)

Short Term Parking

KLIA have more than 5,700 bays for your convenience at Block A, B, C & D. Cars that are parked for more than 18hrs within a day would be entitled to free parking until the next day starts. Rates will be reset the next day and added onto fees the day before. The rates ranges from RM2/hr to RM4/hr and max out at RM46 per day.

Long Term Remote Parking

There are more than 4,500 bays available at the LTCP and free shuttle service from LTCP to the terminals is available at every 10 minutes. LTCP location is near Malaysia Airport Training Centre and is approximately 1.5km away from Block D of KLIA which is about 20 min walk. The rates are RM2.50/hr for the first 4 hours, RM2/hr for subsequent hours and max out at RM32 per day.

Long Term Parking

For rates at Block A, its RM46 each day for the first 3 days and RM20 each day until the car leaves the carpark. For rates at Parking E which is near Sama-Sama hotel, it ranges from RM1.50/hr to RM3.50/hr and max out at RM42 per day.

Preferred Parking

Passengers/customers can avoid the hassle of finding a parking spot by choosing to use our Preferred Parking facility. Preferred Parking is located at Level 2, Block B & C of the Short-Term Car Park giving nearer access to the Main Terminal building. There are more than 300 bays at the Preferred Parking. The rates ranges from RM4/hr to RM5/hr and max out at RM100.50 per day.

Valet Parking

For added convenience, passengers can choose to use Valet Parking facility. It is fully guarded by 24-hour security surveillance cameras. Valet Parking charges RM16/Hr for the first hour and RM7/hr for subsequent hours.

Parking Facilities (KLIA2)
Limitations and Constraints
of Parking Facilities

KLIA and KLIA2 handles over 100,000 passengers daily and thus having just over 16,000 parking bays might not be enough to accommodate to the passenger flow at the airport.

Another constraint is the parking fees at short term car park. The fees are more expensive than long term car parks. this may cause some people to change their mind and park at long term car park instead despite it being far from the terminals. However for others, they would rather pay more for a more convenient access to the terminals even though there is shuttle bus service to bring them from the long term car park to the terminal if they were to park there.

Having an option for other parking like valet parking and preferred parking is quite redundant as it only reduces the number of parking bays "available" to public as people rarely go for valet parking and preferred parking at the airport. This is due to the high cost of preferred parking fee and valet parking fee. By allocating bays for other parkings, there will be numerous parking bays left unused as people find it a waste of money to park there.
